MENU RULES — How to Play

You just saw an anagram

LUMEN RUSE → MENU RULES

Same letters, different arrangement. A clue is built from three parts: a definition, some material to work with, and a Signal telling you what to do with it — inside a sentence that sounds perfectly ordinary.

Our House Rules

Lumen Ruse is rooted in traditional cryptic puzzling, but it isn’t confined to it.

You’ll encounter familiar devices such as anagrams, hidden words, reversals, deletions, containers, charades, homophones, and double definitions. But a Ruse may also ask you to split words differently, weave letters together, notice visual similarities, extract an unusual pattern, or follow another fair piece of wordplay.

We occasionally take liberties a traditional Ximenean crossword might not.

What we don’t take liberties with is the solve.

Every word has a reason. The answer must be recoverable from the clue, the mechanism must be explainable after the reveal, and misdirection should make the solution satisfying—not arbitrary.

Lumen Fairness

Fair doesn’t have to mean familiar. A Ruse may bend cryptic convention, but it shouldn’t require mind-reading. Once revealed, you should be able to trace the path from clue to answer and understand why the words were chosen.
